Two Cafes, Same Tradition
Rameshwaram Cafe and Shastrys Cafe both come from the same lineage of Brahmin cafes that descend from MTR, Brahmins Coffee Bar, Veena Stores and the Tamil/Kannada Brahmin home kitchen tradition. They share more than they differ.
But they are not identical. Here's the honest comparison.
Format
**Rameshwaram Cafe:** Stand-up, fast-casual, paper plates, modern QSR layout. Fast service, high turnover, designed for queue throughput.
**Shastrys Cafe:** Sit-down, family-style, neighbourhood cafe. Slower-paced, table service, designed for relaxed eating.
Crowd & Wait
**Rameshwaram:** 30-90 minute queues at peak times (weekend mornings, evenings). Reels-fame crowds. Loud, energetic.
**Shastrys:** Walk-in, usually no wait. Quiet, neighbourhood crowd. Conversational.
The Food
**Common ground:**
• Both use fresh batter
• Both grind chutney fresh
• Both follow no-garlic, no-onion Brahmin discipline
• Both serve proper South Indian filter coffee
• Both nail Ghee Dosa, Pongal and Vada
**Where they differ:**
• Rameshwaram has a wider Tamil-Brahmin specialty menu (multiple podi idlis, dosas, regional specialties)
• Shastrys has a wider Karnataka-Brahmin menu (akki rotti, ragi rotti, bisibelebath, chitranna, puliyogare, obbattu, plus a full lunch thali)
• Rameshwaram is tiffin-focused (no full lunch thali)
• Shastrys has a complete South Indian Set Meals (₹120) — full Brahmin lunch thali
Pricing
| Item | Rameshwaram | Shastrys |
|---|---|---|
| Idli (per piece) | ~₹50-60 | ₹40 |
| Vada | ~₹40-60 | ₹25 |
| Masala Dosa | ~₹100-140 | ₹70 |
| Ghee Masala Dosa | ~₹130-160 | ₹85 |
| Filter Coffee | ~₹40-60 | ₹15 |
| Ven Pongal | ~₹80-110 | ₹50 |
Shastrys is roughly 40-60% cheaper across the board because it is a neighbourhood cafe, not a chain in a premium area.
Location & Distance
**Rameshwaram:** Brookfield, Indiranagar, ORR. Convenient if you live in East Bangalore. 25-30 km from Hebbal/Kodigehalli/Yelahanka.
**Shastrys:** Kodigehalli, North Bangalore. Convenient for the Hebbal/Yelahanka/Sahakaranagar/Manyata belt. 18-22 km from Indiranagar/Brookfield.
Verdict
If you live in East Bangalore and have time for the queue, Rameshwaram is excellent.
If you live in North Bangalore or want the same tradition without the queue or the high prices, Shastrys is the local answer. Same flavour profile, smaller crowd, lower bill, plus a full lunch thali on top.
