About Shastrys Cafe
ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರೀಸ್ ಕೆಫೆ — ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರ ಕಲಾತ್ಮಕ ಅಭಿರುಚಿ
A sanctuary of authentic Brahmin cuisine in the heart of North Bangalore. Where every dish is a devotional offering, and every guest is a deity.
Our Story
Shastrys Cafe was born from a deep reverence for the culinary traditions of Karnataka's Brahmin households. For generations, Brahmin cooking has represented the pinnacle of pure, nourishing food — prepared without garlic, guided by the Sattvic philosophy that food is not merely sustenance but a form of devotion.
Located in Kodigehalli, Bangalore, our cafe brings these ancient recipes to the modern table. Every dish is prepared fresh daily, using traditional techniques passed down through generations — from the overnight fermentation of our idli batter to the slow cooking of our bisibelebath masala.
The name "Artistic Brahmin's Taste" reflects our belief that cooking is an art form — one that requires not just skill but also the purity of intention that defines the Brahmin culinary tradition.
Our Philosophy — Sattvic Cooking
No Garlic
We strictly follow traditional Brahmin dietary principles. No garlic — ever. This keeps our food pure, light and easy to digest.
Fresh Every Day
All our dishes are prepared fresh each morning. Our idli batter is fermented overnight. Our chutneys are ground at dawn. Nothing is reheated from the previous day.
Pure Ghee
We use pure cow's ghee in our cooking — the cornerstone of Brahmin cuisine. Ghee adds richness, aids digestion and carries the full flavour of the spices.
Seasonal & Local
We use fresh, locally-sourced vegetables and ingredients. Our spice powders — sambar masala, bisibelebath masala — are made in-house following family recipes.
"In our tradition, every meal is a meditation, every guest is a deity. The mandala teaches us that all paths lead to the center — just as these sacred geometric patterns guide the eye inward, our food guides the senses toward nourishment of body and spirit. Here, Brahmin hospitality meets ancient artistic wisdom, where the circle of life is honored with every dish we serve."
What is Karnataka Brahmin Cuisine?
Karnataka Brahmin cuisine is one of India's most refined culinary traditions. Rooted in the Sattvic philosophy of Vedic culture, it emphasises purity, simplicity and the natural flavour of ingredients. The cuisine spans two main traditions — Smartha Brahmin and Madhava Brahmin — each with its own characteristic spice profiles and dish repertoire.
What distinguishes Brahmin cooking is the complete absence of garlic. Instead, flavour is built through the skillful use of asafoetida (hing), curry leaves, mustard seeds, fresh coconut, tamarind and a complex array of hand-ground spice blends. The result is food that is deeply flavourful without being sharp or heavy.
Karnataka Brahmin cuisine is also intimately connected to religious tradition. Many dishes — such as chitranna (lemon rice), puliyogare (tamarind rice) and holige (sweet flatbread) — are offered as prasad in temples across Karnataka. Eating this food connects you to a tradition of devotion that spans thousands of years.
