The Legacy of Bangalore's Authentic Brahmin Cafes
Three names dominate any serious conversation about authentic Brahmin-style breakfast in Bangalore: **Brahmins Coffee Bar** in Basavanagudi, **Veena Stores** in Malleshwaram, and **Hegde** in Vidyaranyapura. Each has survived decades — some nearly a century — by refusing to compromise on a very simple idea: serve only what a Brahmin household would serve, and serve it well.
What unites these three cafes? One surprising answer: **they serve only chutney with idli and dosa — no sambar**. And this is not a limitation. It is the tradition.
Why Chutney-Only Is the Brahmin Way
In orthodox Smartha and Madhava Brahmin households across Old Mysore and coastal Karnataka, the morning tiffin — idli or dosa — has always been served with **freshly ground coconut chutney** alone. Sambar belongs to the afternoon meal, eaten with rice. Serving sambar at breakfast is a later commercial adaptation (popularised by Udupi restaurants in Mumbai from the 1960s onwards) — it is not the original form.
Brahmins Coffee Bar, Veena Stores, and Hegde have all resisted this commercial drift. They serve idli or vada with nothing but one or two varieties of fresh chutney and a small bowl of ghee. No sambar. No optional additions. And that is why their regulars have stayed loyal for generations.
Brahmins Coffee Bar — Basavanagudi
Tucked into a small lane in Shankarapuram, Basavanagudi, **Brahmins Coffee Bar** has been serving two items — **idli-vada with chutney** and **Kharabath (khara bath)** — for decades. No menu. No frills. You queue, you order by pointing, you stand at a counter and eat. The chutney is a legendary ginger-coconut variety that has never changed recipes.
This is the archetype of the no-sambar Brahmin cafe. Everything about it — from the brass tumbler-davara filter coffee to the ghee-soaked kharabath — is a reminder of what Bangalore breakfast used to be before it became a business.
Veena Stores — Malleshwaram
On Margosa Road in Malleshwaram, **Veena Stores** has served idli, vada, kharabath, khali-dosa, and filter coffee since the 1970s. The queue starts before 7 AM. The idlis are soft, huge, and served only with a coconut-red chilli chutney. There is no sambar.
Veena Stores is the neighbourhood cafe that defines what "Brahmin tiffin" means for a generation of Bangaloreans — and it draws visitors from across the city who want to start their day the right way.
Hegde — Vidyaranyapura
In the quieter northern pocket of Vidyaranyapura, **Hegde** operates out of a modest frontage but commands fierce local loyalty. Run by a Udupi Brahmin family, the menu covers idli, vada, rava idli, khali-dosa, and kharabath — each served with fresh coconut chutney only. Their filter coffee is among the best in North Bangalore.
Hegde is proof that you don't need to be in the old city to find this tradition. The North — Vidyaranyapura, Sahakaranagar, Kodigehalli — is where the next generation of authentic Brahmin cafes is rooted.
Shastrys Cafe — The Same Tradition, in Kodigehalli
At **Shastrys Cafe** in Kodigehalli, we follow the exact same tradition. Our idli, vada, masala dosa, and set dosa are served with **freshly ground coconut chutney** — ground each morning, never reheated. We do not serve sambar with tiffin. We serve it — and rasam — with our lunch thali, in the proper order of a Brahmin meal.
If you love Brahmins Coffee Bar, Veena Stores, or Hegde and you live or work anywhere in Kodigehalli, Sahakaranagar, Hebbal, Yelahanka, Jakkur, or the Bellary Road belt — Shastrys is the cafe that belongs in that line.
